When we were in Montreal, we went to Exporail. It was excellent. When we arrived we were immediately impressed. They have a large building with about 9-10 trains in it, with descriptions of the trains and their functions. They also have a clip from the upcoming Imax movie, "Rocky Mountain Express". The movie looks quite good.
We walked around the museum, then went for lunch. After lunch, we came back (we just went across the street), and rode on the streetcar that takes you around the property. We went to Shed 5, which is the original museum. The museum has been there for 50 years, but the new building is only about 5 years old. There was about a dozen trains in there too, mainly from the UK. We also rode the miniature railroad (in the rain).
The staff there were extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and if you are in the Montreal area, I highly recommend it.
