There are two main types of cross-stitchers. Those who do it right and those who do it wrong. No, wait, there is no wrong way.
There is stitching on a hoop or stretcher bars and then there is free hand.
Paulina and Aunt Gail stitch free hand. They hold the cloth in the their hand and stitch away. There are some advantages to this. You can bring the needle up and down with one motion, so it's probably faster. Your projects aren't limited to whether your stretcher bars are free. You don't have the cost of stretcher bars or hoops and if the project is small, it can be hard to find a small hoop. Plus you have no hoop marks (see my pictures from my last post).
Grandpa and I stitch on hoops or stretcher bars. I frankly can not stitch without the fabric held taunt. I find the holes are easier to see. When I stitch on stretcher bars, I actually stitch with two hands, one on the top and one on the bottom. I will admit starting a new thread or finishing one is a pain on stretcher bars, when they are on a stand, but it's worth the pain to me. I also think the fabric stays cleaner as you aren't touching it as much with your hands. And you don't get too many projects on the go, as you are limited by the quantity of hoops you have (you can decide if that's good or bad).
Freestyle or hoop. You decide who is right or wrong.
